Mosque of Córdoba

The Mosque-Cathedral was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 9 May 1984.

Cordoba is a city with a great cultural and monumental legacy, especially from its most glorious period after the Arab conquest in the eighth century, specifically during the caliphates of Abd al-Rahman III and his successor Al-Hakam II, becoming one of the most extraordinary cities in medieval Europe comparable to Damascus, Baghdad and Constantinople of that time.

One of the emblems of the city and of the fundamental works of Hispano-Muslim art, the Great Mosque, which was begun in 785 by order of Abd al-Rahman I on the ancient Visigoth basilica of St. Vincent, built in turn on a Roman temple. A unique artistic achievement due to its size and the height of its ceilings, becoming the second most important temple in the Muslim world, only behind Mecca.
